Summary/Abstract: Sociological aspects of euthanasia and discontinuation of persistent treatment as well as admissibilityof both forms in the light of the Polish legal acts are presented in the article. It comprisesresults of the study made by Centre for Public Opinion Research, which shown society difficultiesin distinguishing euthanasia from discontinuation of persistent treatment. In addition,the article offers the analysis of Polish legal acts, such as the Constitution of the Republic ofPoland and the act on Patient Rights and the Patient Rights Ombudsman and also the analysis ofEuropean Court of Human Rights judgments. Furthermore, the distinguishing criteria between allowed and unlawful situations of termination of the patient’s therapy were presented as well.The article focuses also on admissibility to make pro futuro statements by patients and containsde lege ferenda postulates.
