Summary/Abstract: Hunedoara County has one of the biggest varieties of Christmas traditions among which we can mention carols sung by children or by groups of young men. Besides carols that represent a great performance (“Duba”, “Cerbul” and “Căluşarii”) or types of carols that one can see in other regions as well (“Bâtaşii”, “Turca” and “Capra”, “Viflaimul”, “Craii” or “Irozii”), there are two types of carols specific to this area, the south-east of Apuseni Mountains, the fir-tree carol and the tree carol. We believe that the fir-tree carol and the tree carol traditions come from the cultural and mythological background of the fir tree, both due to the way in which the main parts are built, the tree and the fir-tree, but also to the way these are used during the carolling ritual. Their structure, which resembles a cone, and the way they are handled suggests the existence of mythical reminiscences of the cosmic tree. Moreover, the horizontal cross and the signals of the four bells fixed to the arms of the cross, reinforce the sacred and magic side of this tradition. The tree and fir-tree carols are probably the traces of a very old origin, that are still alive in these enclaves from Apuseni Mountains, and that are still produced, under this form, due to a collective custom even if no conscious signification demand their presence.
