Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to creatively develop the concept of “contact zones” (Mary Louise Pratt and Stephen Greenblatt) as an epistemological tool for describing contemporary social antagonisms and nascentnationalisms. According to the author, the contact zone, instead of servingto destroy the dualistic divisions in the world, as the aforementionedtheorists have hoped for, should today become a tool for organizing cultural reality by revealing the processes of having members of affective communities fill the antagonistic roles of the conflict. The author discusses the mechanisms of the formation and antagonism of these affective communities on, for example, the media performances and discourses accompanying the Spanish‑Catalan conflict around the independence referendum in Catalonia in October 2017.
