The sublime in politics

Author(s): Marc Richir

Summary/Abstract: In his study of the sublime in politics, Richir reads the French Revolution as a religious event. For him the collapse of the classical theology of politics signifies the advent of the sublime in politics, by which he means the abyss of political foundation. Richir draws upon Kant’s conception of the sublime developed in the Critique of Judgment. The sublime in politics is considered as the utopian moment of the Revolution. It was the event when the abyss of foundation in politics was revealed, from which the new gods of political modernity surged forth (humanity, nation, the people) and with them began the dialectic of the desacralization and resacralization of politics.
