THE CONCEPT OF GEOPOLITICAL WADGES. AN ATTEMPT AT THE TERMINOLOGICAL CONCLUSIONS

Summary/Abstract: The issues related to the processes of integration, disintegration and reintegrationobserved in the 21st century in Europe need new research tools. One of these tools is theconcept of geopolitical wedges, which can be used by the powers to keep influence in theareas of its natural interests. The aim of the article is to present theoretical conceptsrelated to the issue of geopolitical wedges as well to describe one of the examples ofgeopolitical wedges, i.e. the Kaliningrad region. In addition, the author will review thescientific literature for the presence of this concept, and will attempt to locate theconcept of geopolitical wedges among the essential geopolitical paradigms. The author'sassumption is not only to locate the issue of the geopolitical wedge in the literature ofthe subject, but also to present its explanatory role for the description of internationalrelations in Europe on the example of processes of reintegration of the post-Soviet space.
