Summary/Abstract: Lads' bands of Sălaj have been allocated few specialized studies. The entire ethnographic area of the Barcău Upper Valley uses a minimalist terminology – lads of the village. The bands get shape in the before Christmas. The most common admission criteria in the group are the aspirant's age, the community status of the young men, the level of sociability, their physical-vocal qualities or the area where they come from. The number of members varies, ranging from 6- 10 and up to 20- 60 young unmarried men; the average fellowship (10-15 / 20 lads) remains the most prevalent. The number of lads' bands is dictated by the surface of the village, or, sometimes, by the historical period in which it exists. Lads of the village have rather simpler organisation arrangements, so the function can be assumed, locally, by two- three or four single men. The leader/ leaders have to meet a series of socio-moral qualities, imposing themselves as model/ models for others. The lexical variety of titles is limited. Sometimes there are lax forms of hierarchy, the same rank accepting, locally, new attributions.
