Summary/Abstract: Light verse is a well-known but rarely defined term in poetry studies. In my paper, I explore some possible definitions on the basis of handbooks of literature and Hans Robert Jauss’s reception theory; then, I discuss the main features of light verse through some examples of contemporary British poets (Wendy Cope, Carol Ann Duffy, Fleur Adcock, and Roger McGough). I pay special attention to how popular poetry is related to serious verse and conclude that light verse plays an important role not only in making poetry popular but also in displaying the mechanism of poetry.
