Summary/Abstract: The article is focusing on the characteristics of the political regime and media system of Croatian republic during the reign of president Franjo Tudjman and his political party Croatian Democratic Community (Hrvatska demokratska zajednica – HDZ), and also on the characteristics of the time afterwards, from 2000 up to the present. The first half of the 20 years period (from 1990-2000) is considered to be the era of non-consolidated democracy with a semi-presidential system where we can just barely talk about independent media. From 2000 on, the second half of the analyzed period, the party and political arrangement in Croatia changed significantly, bringing also a weighty change to the media environment and a transition to democracy in general. Croatia turned into a classic parliamentary democracy. International relations also normalized after the election of new government in 2000. Nowadays, we can consider Croatian republic to be a standard democracy. One of its primary foreign policy goals is to enter the European Union.
