Summary/Abstract: The urbanonymy of new socialist cities and housing estates built in Central Europe after the Second World War represents a specific type of typonymic system whose defining characteristic is their honorific function. It is therefore understandable that many of these names were changed after the fall of communism. The article provides arguments supporting the preservation of the original urbanonyms, despite their ideologically motivated origins. The author also focuses on the role of toponyms as elements contributing to local identity and attempts to define their value as a part of cultural heritage.
