Music Education of Children and Adolescents in Contemporary Cultural Reality – Opportunities and Threats

Summary/Abstract: Music and all kinds of artistic activities connected with it may be included in the educational process and can serve student’s development and self-creation in different ways. Nowadays, however, music education of children and youth in Poland, significantly not responding to the challenges of reality and social needs, is in crisis and comes under crushing criticism. Variability of life and speed of changes generate many new phenomena – also in the area of music culture. The text is an attempt to reconstruct thinking about music education based on rational analysis of real opportunities and threats posed by the contemporary reality of the socio-cultural process of education of children and adolescents. It is focused on two main themes, in my opinion – the most important ones: 1) the sense and significance of music education in light of modern research; 2) music education and axiological context. In conclusion, the author states that till this day we failed to instill in our society either the confidence about the need for interesting and valuable music education classes, which should be conducted by a specialist and which should be compensating or expanding musical experience of the child (related to the reconstruction and co-construction of the original musical habitus, often shaped on the basis of primitive standards of mass culture), or the need to treat them in a more serious way in the context both in terms of raising awareness of the values discovered and experienced through music, and because of the qualities of general-communing with the music.
