Summary/Abstract: Although the Romanian language possesses a remarkable unity, one could observe multiple “literary dialects” emerging in the incipient period of literary Romanian. Their existence is plausible both from the point of view of the linguist, observant of even the finest distinctions, and of the speaker, observant of more general differences, mostly at the usage level. A deeper analysis reveals how the presence of multiple, non-hierarchical cultural centres and of slight diatopic and diastratic differences, on top of a remarkable unity of the linguistic system, have contributed to the evolution of a literary aspect free of constraints and enjoying parallel developments.
