Summary/Abstract: The text discusses the issue of university teaching of Bulgarian studies in the context of the issue of university teaching of South Slavic languages at Masaryk University in Brno, Czechia. The text presents the traditions and the contemporary situation in teaching Bulgarian language at Faculty of Arts in Brno – it is taught at Bulgarian philology and also at Balkan studies in the traditional discourse of teaching the so called small European languages. Bulgarian languages is also studied as a freely-chosen subject within two or four semesters offered to all university students. The Bulgarian philology in Brno was able to protect its right to exist and was not closed despite the lack of official institutional support from the Bulgarian state (i.e. without official lecturer) until 2019. For almost three decades the only place in Czechia, where Bulgarian philology was studied as a separate specialty, used to be the department of Slavistics at Masaryk University. In our paper though we reflect the new requirements on teaching Bulgarian in foreign universities in the new millenium, the difficulties that we met in the last two decades. The text is also an attempt to answer the question of what the new structure of Bulgarian philology degree programs, which will be offered since 2019 will bring to students and university teachers.
