Summary/Abstract: The analysis of the letters owned by the German ethnic region house (tájház) of Soroksár is a powerful piece, which draws its authenticity from the details. For today’s sensitive and intellectually aware readers, it brings alive a tragic event that took place seven decades ago: the calvary of an ethnic group and how the members of this group took root slowly but unstoppably in the war-eroded soil of their old-time motherland (Germany) left behind more than two centuries earlier. From the letters unfolds the personal tragedy of a family: they contain small details presenting the circumstances of their expulsion, the difficulties of starting a new life in Germany as well as background information to the family’s identity. As such they can prove to be a useful source for researchers working on macro-history as well.
