Summary/Abstract: Pszów, a small town located in the Upper Silesia, is famous for a late-baroque St. Mary’s Sanctuary, that was established “around” the Virgin Mother’s picture – a copy of the Image of Black Madonna of Częstochowa. The fast-developing cult, numerous cases of healings, the offering of votives – all that gave rise to a pilgrimage church, a high-scale construction of two towers, spacious, of a façade that corresponded to the chief architectural solution of the Austrian and Czech baroque, with the main altar being the reflection of a Sedes Sapientiae idea, popular in the Silesia region of that time. The Sanctuary’s prime enlivenment was in the 19th century, when Father Paweł Skwara built the further level of towers onto the church and a small Calvary around. The ceremonies in the church were organised at that time with grand sumptuousness and referred to lavish ceremonies of the preceding epoch. The peculiar location of Pszów – in the cultural frontier – was the reason why, for ages, the pilgrimage centre was a common good of the Poles, the Czechs and the Germans. The Silesians were conservative people, attached to the faith and traditions of their fathers, who inseparably connected their feeling of Polishness with their membership in the Catholic Church.
