Summary/Abstract: After the terrorist assault of 9/11 global cities are considered to be a prime target for international terrorism. However, since the mid-60’s some British towns, and London especially, have been attacked by the Provisional IRA bombers. To defend the City of London against the terrorist threat a security cordon was introduced there in 1993. It consisted of a chain of roadblocks and armed checkpoints supported by a sophisticated CCTV network connected to the police database that can automatically spot a suspicious vehicle. Many traffic restrictions were introduced and the number of entry points leading to the City was significantly reduced. This security system was commonly referred to as “the Ring of Steel”. The implemented security measures have been sometimes subject to criticism but nevertheless they have proved to be successful, and they are highlighted by citizens as improving quality of life. Moreover, a number of other benefits have emerged, such as a reduction of recorded crime, pollution, and traffic accidents. Following London’s example, some other cities are developing similar systems. The best example can be found in New York where the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative was designed to help ensure public safety and security and to deter and prevent potential terrorist attacks.
