Summary/Abstract: This paper sets to analyze and compare three anonymous translations of Charles Dickens’s gothic short story The Black Veil that appeared in the 19th-century, the first one serving as an introduction of Dickens on the Polish literary scene. The analysis focuses on selected issues, such as the reconstruction of the suspense, treatmentof culture, translators’ linguistic competence and completeness of the text.
