Summary/Abstract: The poetic work od F. Halas, a distinguished poet of 20th century, could be interpreted as a contention of the antithetical attitudes of faith and scepticism. Although Halas’ life and work had leftist leanings, as an artist he always aimed to achieve deeper spiritual dimensions in his poetry. Halas’ contention of faith and scepticism seems to dominate in the collections of poetry Kohout plaší smrt (1930) and Tvář (1931). Halas’ work substantially changes in the second half of 1930ies, in the time od the imminent World War II, as could be seen in the book of poetry Dokořán (1936). This trend culminates in Torzo naděje (1938) and V řadě (1949) where Halas expressed his fear for the fate od the Czech nation and bore witness to dramatic war events. The complexity of Halas’ development manifests itself even in the last book of poetry A co?, which responds to the complicated post-war situation resultig eventually in the loss of democracy in contemporary Czechoslovakia. In 1949 Halas suddenly dies. Shortly after his death Halas’ poetic work criticised from one-sided ideological standpoints.
