Summary/Abstract: As a poet Jiří Wolker enjoyed great popularity among literary critics as well as readers from the very beginning. At the same time the reception of his work was marked with controversial critical and literary historical interpretations, which manifested themselves in the critical account Dosti Wolkera (Enough Wolker) in 1925 written by František Halas, Bedřich Václavek and Artuš Černík. In 1934 the journal of Listy pro umění a kritiku (Journal for art and criticism) published an article Jiří Wolker po deseti letech (Jiří Wolker ten years after) whose authors (František Halas, Bedřich Fučík, Pavel Levit and Vilém Závada) presented a sharp criticism of the poet’s work, which again urged other writers (Vítězslav Nezval, Karel Teige, Karel Čapek etc.) to defend him. The dispute over Wolker continued and could be detected even in 1950s, especially in the ideologically shaped presentation by L. Štoll. The core of the polemics and arguments, however, lies in the problem of analysing and interpreting his poetry, particularly in the determination of its specific lyrical quality originally inspired by traditions in modern Czech poetry and also by G. Apollinaire. Wolker’s further development was influenced by the ideas of Proletarian art, which gained ground in young generation writings after World War I.
