Summary/Abstract: It is the popular magazines that clearly demonstrate the political circumstances within which they are obliged to operate and the constraints of ideology due to the aim of magazines to gain great circulation and become profitable. What is more, sometimes the magazines reflect ideology as something which may be laughed at. The paper discusses an example: the humorous detective story “Troubles of Emauel” (“Emanel v nesnázích”) by Eduard Fiker, which was published in a magazine “May” (“Květen”), in the volume 5, in 1949. Fiker concentrated on the social literary order and wrote an ironic bucolic portrait of the so-called SNB, the then police. However, the magazine did not manage to comform with cultural politics and the restriction of popular reading. At last, it was forced to close in 1951 and the Fiker’s story was indicated as the “vulgar detective story”.
