Summary/Abstract: A very large quantity of so called “legacy” software, all over the world, is written in “COBOL” and soon or later will be a subject of modernization – reengineering or rewriting. That is why parsing of the code of a legacy system, when it exists, written in some of the enormously many COBOL dialects will be necessary in order to extract implemented in it business logic and to use it for modernization purposes. Unfortunately COBOL is really a family (or hierarchy) of dialects and parsing the code of an arbitrary legacy system could be a real challenge (especially when, in most of the cases, there is no documentation mentioning which is the used dialect). The paper presents the recent steps in the process of creating a system for parametrized parsing for the dialects of the COBOL family. The proposed idea is applicable for parsing other programming languages, too.
