Summary/Abstract: In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a jet impinging against a flat plate covered with a porous layer were investigated numerically so that to in search of usage areas of porous materials. The bottom plate was kept at a constant temperature. An air jet, issued from a slot on the middle of the top plate, was impinged on the bottom plate covered with a porous layer. It was assumed that there is local thermal equilibrium between the solid matrix of porous layer and the fluid. The flow was considered to be laminar and steady. ANSYS Fluent software was used for the solutions. The results were presented in terms of local heat flux from the bottom plate. The results obtained indicate that when the plate is covered with a porous layer, the heat transfer increases in comparison with the case without a porous layer for the cases considered. It has been found that the heat transfer is more effective at a certain ranges of porosity, permeability, thermal conductivity and thickness of porous layer. Thus, the following comment can be made: metallic porous materials could be used in local cooling such as electronic cooling systems that have vital importance in central processing unit.
