Summary/Abstract: This contribution attempts to throw light on some “forgotten” music institutions in today‘s second largest Slovenian city, Maribor, in the 19th century. The beginnings of the development of musical life in Maribor (within the framework of organisations) date back to the late 18th century, more precisely, to the year 1793. Although first cultural and arts societies in Maribor in the first half of the 19th century did bring some improvement in the town‘s musical life, their musical achievements nevertheless remained modest. It was thus not till the second half of the 19th century that was marked by the beginning of the systematic development of musical reproduction, and is significant primarily because of the first attempts of Slovenian patriots to establish their societies in Maribor and nearby towns. This gradually led to a split in the social life of the town, and consequently resulted in more pronounced national divisions into Germans and Slovenes, which lasted until 1918.
