Summary/Abstract: The article aims to present the monster creatures from the novel „Lord of the rings” within the discourse of the beast, and to clarify the meaning of the concept “monster”. In addition, the paper presents a classification of Tolkien’s monsters, a description of their peculiarities and functions. An attempt is made to explain the etymology of their names in the novel. The monsters are presented with reference to the themes of fear and horror in accordance with their main function as instruments of the evil forces that are subordinate to Sauron.
