Beyond the traumatic experience: the Baroque picaresque and the transformations of the genre

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the genre of the picaresque novel and its transformations since the 17th century. The study aims to introduce the basic characteristics of the classic picaresque and to compare them with the variants of the genre in more recent times. The concept of the sociocultural function of the picaresque novel, which is re-updated in the most dramatic moments of the historical development of Europe, is pivotal to the present research. This transformation of the genre is motivated by the dominant function of the novel - to “disclose” - and thus “the great history” is represented paradoxically through the means of the parody and the grotesque.
