Ethnosemiotics – Origin, Problems and Perspectives

Summary/Abstract: The first part of the article traces the circumstances in the world of scientific research which led to the appearance of ethnosemiotics. The influence upon the latter on the part of French structuralism and the English symbolic anthropology is pointed out, as well as the close interrelation between structuralism and ethnosemiotics. The general outlines are given of its development in Hungary, the Soviet Union, Western Europe and the United States. The second part provides an example indicating the possibilities to apply the ethnosemiotic approach in the analysis of cultural phenomena. Finally, the author underlines the perspectives in ethnosemiotics and some of its specific tasks. He proves, on the basis of all this, that ethnosemiotics can become a means for true advance in social and cultural anthropology. It could also give impetus to the studies in the sphere of theory of culture.
