Summary/Abstract: The cholera epidemic of 1913 and the earthquake from November 1940 were the two natural disasters that hit Buzău during the first half of the twentieth century. The measures that were taken by the city hall to respect the harsh rules of urban hygiene had restricted greatly the effects of cholera. In the case of the earthquake, officials from Buzău and Mizil had taken the first steps to determine the damages and then to repair or demolish the damaged buildings. The most damaged building of Buzău was Communal Palace, the true building symbol of the town. The vital involvement of the home office in restoring proves that this building had become significant on a national level.
