Summary/Abstract: Reflecting on defining the competence of an interpreter, it is important to first ask yourself what the scope of an interpreter’s ability is and how to measure it. One of the important determinants of the competence of an interpreter is extensive knowledge of specialized terminology used for the description of the translation process. In the present article, we will try to find an answer to the following questions: (1) how precise, useful, and effective is translation terminology in describing and analyzing the translation process, (2) how does the evolving division of the discipline into different schools representing different approaches to translatology negatively affect homogeneity and terminological consistency, and (3) has there ever been, in a general sense, homogeneity and terminological consistency in translatology.
