Summary/Abstract: Contents of the article concentrate on security of waterways in the aspect of maritime piracy threats. Nowadays, maritime criminals constitute not only a direct threat for ships and crews, but their activity hits navigational industry and significantly raises costs of services provided by the ship owners. The purpose of the article is to make the diagnosis of the phenomenon of the maritime piracy and identify the possibility of counteractions. The article gives the interpretation of comprehending the notion of maritime piracy. It presents the diagnosis of offences committed on the seas and in ports as well as explains the phenomenon of maritime piracy in the international dimension. The article is focused on identification of undertakings aimed to limit the above mentioned phenomenon and to present the author’s recommendations.
