Determinants of Premium Increase in the Motor Third Liability Insurance of Vehicle Owners in Poland

Summary/Abstract: The “price war” on the Polish motor insurance market has led to previously unlisted losses in technical activity in group 10 of section II. Starting from 2015, there is a sudden increase in the motor third liability insurance prices. The main purpose of the study is to review the most important causes of this situation. Own contribution is the identification of the most important determinants of premium increase on the Polish market. The research has positively verified the hypothesis, which states that the main determinant of current increases in contributions in motor third liability insurance are legal regulations (guidelines and recommendations of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority and the case law of Supreme Court), that contribute to the increase of the value of paid claims and loss adjustment expenses, and consequently deepen technical losses in this class of insurance. The low level of road safety, as well as the increase in insurance crime and tax solutions, are less important factors. The study required literature studies, reports and studies of domestic and foreign institutions, such as the Polish Chamber of Insurance (PIU), the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF), the Insurance Guarantee Fund (UFG), the Police Headquarters and the European Insurance and Reinsurance Federation. The main research methods are: literature analysis, observation of phenomena and comparative analysis.
