Summary/Abstract: This paper presents consideration whether and how insurance influences economic growth. The importance of the insurance sector in the economy has risen over time, thus the likely impact of insurance onto the economy should have gone up. This article is a review of theoretical and empirical aspects of mutual relationships between economic growth (GDP) and development of the insurance sector. We thus conclude that the growth of the insurance sector both in the developed, developing and emergent countries influences economic growth. Disagreement concerns only the intensity of links between life insurance branch and economic growth and non-life insurance and economic growth. We argue that the insurance sector needs to be paid more attention in the financial sector analysis and macroeconomic theory.
