Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the characteristics of the lexis of the GDR period that was excerpted from Duden, a dictionary of the German language. The main aim of the study is to define the frequency of use of selected lexical units before the establishment of the German Democratic Republic in 1949. The results of the analysis based on texts from an electronic corpus of German (DWDS) indicate that part of the lexis classified in the Duden as characteristic of the GDR period existed in the German language before the division of Germany. The explanation for this phenomenon provided by the authors is the return of repressed German immigrants to their homeland. The analysis is preceded by an overview of historical background of German immigrants in the former Russian Empire. Subsequently, the paper describes the most salient features of the language used by the German minority in the Soviet Union and presents the reasons why the Germans in Russia chose to return to their homeland.
