Summary/Abstract: The article treats family tensions as they are represented in three plays after the French Revolution: Le mari coupable, Le souper de famille and Le tyran domestique. In these plays, family tensions constitute the plot that recounts the relationships between spouses as well as between parents and their children. In all three cases, the children criticize the behaviour of one of their parents. The article aspires to put in evidence changes in family dynamics after the French Revolution. The children, previously obliged to obey their fathers’ orders in the patriarchal society before the Revolution, have now the opportunity to openly express their own opinions and volition. They express their disapproval of the behaviour of their father – or (in Le souper de famille) of their mother. Such plots did not exist in the pre-revolutionary theatre. Consequently, it can be claimed that French Revolution and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen had also an impact on family relationships, a fact that is reflected in the playwrights of that era.
