THE SLAVONIC MONTHLY STICHERARION AS THE CONTINUATION OF THE OLD BULGARIAN MENAIA TRADITION

Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to translation features of the earliest text witnesses of Church Slavonic Monthly Sticherarion of the 12th c. Textual analysis of translation techniques has shown that the texts making up a collection had not been translated at the same time. It is possible to single out Western Bulgarian (Ochrid), Eastern Bulgarian (Preslav), and early Russian layers in the stichera texts. Diverse translation techniques can be found, each employing different instruments to achieve lexical and morphological equivalence between the two languages. This is a proof of the Sticherarion’s compilatory nature. All the texts in the extant copies of the Sticherarion differ little from one another. There is no doubt that the Book of Sticherarion belongs to compilations that appeared after the reform connected with imposition of the Typikon of Patriarch Alexios Stoudites, because the differences in the texts contained in the Sticherarion and in the Novgorod Service Menaia are insignificant. The only exception is the four stichera contained in Sin. 572 that represent the legacy of the Old Bulgarian Menaia tradition, which also confirms the hypothesis of independent compilation of each book on the basis of available texts of the Menaia.
