Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this article is to present students’ preferences and expectations related to possible future work in the IT profession. At the beginning of the article, the students’ perception of the current situation and market conditions in which IT specialists operate and the development trends in the context of the challenges, hopes and fears related to performing work related to IT, were analyzed. In addition, the barriers and determinants of the choice of this profession were examined. Shortcomings in higher education in this area and ways to overcome them in achieving the position of IT specialists were also discussed. An additional element was to examine the perception of the IT profession compared to the other most popular professions now and in the future. The study was conducted by the CAWI method among students of selected, leading economics universities in Poland. The questionnaire was available to respondents on the servers of the Faculty of Management at the University of Warsaw. Discussion of the results was carried out and synthetic conclusions were drawn, referring to particular aspects of the conducted research. Recommendations regarding the educational options for students of selected economical universities wishing to work in the IT profession were formulated. Research limitations and directions of future work in this field have been defined.
