Summary/Abstract: The fundamental approach to the „quality of life“ (QoL) concept in medicine and in public health proves its relationship with the philosophical theories of happiness. In this report, happiness is viewed as a system of values on which QoL ideas are based, also related to health. The aim is to trace the evolution of the philosophical traditions of happiness from antiquity to the present days. This scientific study implies the historical approach to research following the stages through which the European civilization passes understanding happiness. The study focuses on questions about the meaning and content of happiness, as well as on the ways to achieve the best possible life. Happiness is often use as a synonym of health. The report proves the analytical connection of the holistic approach to health with happiness through the QoL concept.
