Summary/Abstract: The name of Dr. Angel Pyuкskyuliev is written „with golden letters“ in the history of Varna. This report also examines its active role on a national scale for the Bulgarian public health developments. He was born in Shumen in 1845. Dr. Angel Pyuкskyuliev graduated medicine in the Military Medical School in Tsarigrad. He was in service as a medical doctor from 1871 to 1877 in the Turkish army. After the Liberation he was a district doctor in Gabrovo, and in 1881 he settled down in Varna, where he was on a position of municipality doctor. From 1884 to 1892 Dr. Pyuкskyuliev was a director of the Varna First-level District Hospital. In 1885 he was mobilized in the Serbian-Bulgarian war and was a head of the military hospital in Lom. Within the period of 1892–1894, Dr. Pyuкskyuliev was a director of the Civilian Sanitary head office in Sofia and he was a president of the VI-th Superior medical council. In 1883 he was one of the founders of Varna “Medical association“, and its headperson. He took a part in Association’s activities publishing in its organ “Medical journal“. Dr. Pyuкskyuliev wrote about very important public health issues as hygiene, infectious diseases management etc. He published the first book about Varna and the public health importance of the regional sea baths. He was elected twice as a mayor of Varna. Dr. Pyuкskyuliev has greatly contributed to modernization of the city, building water supply and sewerage and establishing Varna as a favorite tourist destination. He was the president of the Varna branch of Bulgarian medical association from 1903 until his dead in 1935.
