Summary/Abstract: Leadership in SMEs is fundamental for competitiveness and its permanence in the market, in the case of Mexico SMEs and medium-sized companies are financial funds and represent 99% of the economy, generating 80% of jobs and of which 65% are family members. This reality does not escape the construction sector which represents 10% of the Mexican economy. This qualitative, descriptive and explanatory research aims to analyze the leadership and challenges of SMEs in the construction sector in the city of Guanajuato, based on the study case methodology. The data collection techniques were a designed and application of the interview and direct observation. The results of the interview, as well as the comparative case study show that family SMEs faces problems with less difficulty when the founder is in charge of the company. However, they are at risk due to: lack of definition in profiles, the sons and daughters are in the same decision-making hierarchy, the staff has friendship links, the legal environment is weak, and finally the founder is not clear about the necessary requirements to appoint his successor.
