Generational Succession and Innovation in Family Agricultural Farms. Case Study Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit, Mexico

Summary/Abstract: The economic development of a country is driven by the companies and their capacity to innovate products and services. In Mexico, the advanced age of the producers makes it difficult to progress and innovate, the succession of the company has permitted the generational transfer of leadership, ownership and control of the same, which ensures the continuity of the family business, impacting positively on the process of innovation. The objective is to determine whether the succession leads to a greater propensity to innovation in new generations of farmers. The research was carried out in agricultural family businesses, located in the municipality of Santiago Ixcuintla in Nayarit, Mexico, with reference to the agricultural cycle 2014–2015. A questionnaire was applied to 91 producers, selected through random sampling, accuracy of 10% and reliability of 95%, resulting in more than 20,000 observations. The results indicate that the companies managed by a second generation have a greater propensity to innovate, mainly in production processes, conversion of crops, product marketing and organizational innovation, including the head of family 55% of family members working in the company. Public policy should consider these factors in its design.
