Summary/Abstract: Modern enterprises are trying to build a competitive advantage through active innovation activities. The implementation of such a targeted activity is associated with the need to choose between risk and benefits and influences the decision to choose the right innovation strategy. The key task of such a strategy is to obtain the maximum benefits from the innovative activity and to minimize the costs associated with this risk. The article discusses the decision of the company in which direction it should implement its innovation strategy in terms of choosing the degree of innovation. The focus has been put on breakthrough innovations that require a new business model and decisions on the selection of a strategy based on radical innovation that requires new technological competences. Attention was also paid to safer routine innovations. Moreover, the model example of the matrix of innovative ambitions is illustrated, which can be a helpful tool to stimulate managerial decisions about the planned role of innovation in the organization. A method of critical-cognitive analysis of the literature and a projection method were used to develop the publication.
