Summary/Abstract: Difficulties in access to health care can influence health inequalities. In our three years course research project the main task is to analyse the connection between inequalities and accessibility and its determinative socio-economic factors with quantitative and qualitative methods. The aim of this paper is to discover the role of equal opportunities and its regional differences in the run of morbidity and mortality of acute myocardial infarction which is one of most important non-communicable chronical diseases. Majority of our results can strengthen the conditions of a paradox situation. Firstly, Hungary is significantly lagging behind the most developed European countries, in spite of the improving tendency of the mortality in infarction since the first years after 2000. Secondly, decreasing mortality in acute myocardial infarction went together with increasing regional differences in the past decade. Thirdly, improving conditions in health care of infarction did not necessarily result better chances in accessibility and availability. The further step in our research project is to make a local case study to examine the paradox situation with interviews (e.g. with patients and health care stakeholders) defining the local and institutional challenges in access to health care.
