Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problems associated with the role and the peculiar nature of specialised periodicals devoted to the medical community. The periodicals in question constitute a press organ of the medical self-government which was reinstated after 1989, therefore they also belong to the area of the so-called local and regional area. A particularly in-depth analysis was conducted upon the history, the structure, the mission and the development of the periodical known as “Pro Medico”, published by the Silesian Medical Council in Katowice, whose evolution (since 1989) aptly exemplifies the professionalisation of the regional specialised press, as well as the efficient collaboration with the media community.
