Summary/Abstract: The early book of one of the leaders of Russian Formalist school Boris Eikhenbaum is marked by considerable genre diversity. In the first chapter the author mentions an old poem “HA−Kerav" (“Battle"), which was written in Hebrew by his grandfather Jakob Eikhenbaum and contains the description in verses of a chess game. Such the “overture" determines to some extent the genre poetics of “My Chronicle". The various situations in the contemporary social, cultural and literary life are explored by the author from the standpoint of their conflictness. The main goal of the essay is to show how the motif of “battle" plays an integrative role in the polygenre book.
