Summary/Abstract: This historiographical paper refers to the social and economic situation in Greater Poland of the 19th century against a wider background of civilizational changes of those times. It mentions the famous Organic Work programme which was the distinguishing mark of the so-called “organic movement” in Poznań. In the main part of the paper, we discuss the phenomenon of solidarity among the social estates – aristocracy, clergy, bourgeoisie, peasantry, intelligentsia and even proletariate – which existed in this area in an unprecedented manner. Its interesting consequence was, among other things, open and estate-diversified participation in managing economic institutions that had been established there. Thanks to the solidarity among social estates that survived several generations, the region of Greater Poland was able to maintain its identity in the years of Prussia’s expansive policy.
