Summary/Abstract: In flower symbolism, nothing is as simple as it seems: sometimes, the seemingly straightforward imagery of carnal lust functions as a symbol for celestial, or divine love, and also vice cersa. These secondary meanings tend to remain hidden for those who are not familiar with art history in general and the specific codes used in the particular work of art - or, which is even worse, they can be misunderstood by the layman. In this essay, the author analyses intriguing examples of flower and garden symbolism in Hungarian poetry and art, considered in their wider European context.
