Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the issue of chemical terminology which was the subject of the dispute between Jędrzej Śniadecki and Aleksander Chodkiewicz at the beginning of the 19th century. Both scholars were well-aware of the need to create a proper chemical nomenclature, which was related to the earlier neglect of research in the natural sciences. The paper presents the word formation mechanisms applied by both chemists, such as: neosemantisation in Śniadecki’s case and derivation and normalization of the vocabulary created by Chodkiewicz. The analysis contained in the article has allowed to indicate which of the proposed terms have survived and have been used in the contemporary Polish language.
