Summary/Abstract: The discussion of political commentators on BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) was dominated by two narratives. The first one claims that tightening BRICS group cooperation for several years has resulted in establishing alternative economic bloc against the Western world that is losing global power. According to the second one, there are too many differences between China, Russia, India, Brazil and South Africa, so that the efforts to dominate international 21st century politics can become reality. Skeptics perceive BRICS as a campaign of extravagant rhetoric with no visible achievements. However, supporters of both theories agree that the key to the survival of the BRICS structure is the effective interaction between the two main players, namely Russia and China. Moscow and Beijing consistently promote BRICS as an economic project in which both countries set a new geopolitical paradigm. They present BRICS as an open field of strategic development that gives great opportunities to develop the potential of a new matrix of international relations developed by Russia and China. However, image-building efforts cannot hide significant differences in the real attitudes of both countries. Despite many contentious issues, military, trade and diplomatic cooperation between Russia and China is getting closer. Experts warn that Beijing is too powerful ally for Moscow, which is why will pursue its own interests at the expense of Russia. What is the chance of the creation of Russian-Chinese entents? Is BRICS a cooperation forum for both players or rather rivalry?
