Summary/Abstract: Political scientists and social choice theorists use many diverse typologies and classifications of electoral systems. These systematics take advantage of various criteria of distinguishing the categories. In this article three classifications are analyzed from the point of view of the usability to describe the diversification of the electoral systems in post-communist countries. The analytical appropriateness – the ability to present significant differences among the types of the electoral systems – and the usability to predict the consequences of the electoral systems for the party systems are examined. It was found that the classification fulfilling theoretical postulates most effectively not only makes allowance of proportional representation, majority rule and mixed electoral systems, but also differentiates the proportional formulas fostering large and medium parties and divides the mixed electoral systems category into the segmental and the compensational systems.
