Summary/Abstract: Leszek Kolankiewicz describes selected areas of Jerzy Grotowski’s artisticlife and political activity, focusing on his relations with the CatholicChurch. Situating his investigation in the political context of the PRLera, he juxtaposes selected performances and statements by Grotowskiwith Penderecki, Różewicz, Miłosz and Frljic. The author writes about theTheater of Sources and tries to find an intellectual formula for describingthese activities, and he refers to, among others, Maria Janion andher analyses of Polish Romanticism. Kolankiewicz describes selectedperformances including “Apocalypsis cum figuris” and “A Studium ofHamlet”. Analyzing their reception, in combination with the statementsof the director himself, he draws attention to Grotowski’s often differentintentions from those attributed to him by reviewers. He points to thenon‑obviousnessand ambivalence in naming Grotowski’s anti‑religiousor anti‑churchworks.
