Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the perception of urban space Vyborg, the problem of local identity of its inhabitants. The study of this issue is based on data of a sociological survey, the purpose of which was to identify the component “imaginary” by youth of Vyborg and St. Petersburg residents. With regard to Vyborg issues of identity, perception of urban spaces are particularly interesting, since the city is a complex construct of historical, geopolitical, ethnic and religious and cultural relationships. The notion of Vyborg considered, including as a result of associative perception. Drawing a parallel with studies of other cities (Kaliningrad, Sovetsk, Yaroslavl, Rostov), which are similar to Vyborg its history and status. One of the conclusions is that the issue of the preservation of historical monuments, including, and Soviet-era respondents in Vyborg and St. Petersburg perceive urban space as a cultural whole, without the isolation of Russian / Swedish / Finnish components. The peculiarity of forming the image of the city is the “instability” and rejection of many symbols and monuments of XX–XXI centuries, in large part can be attributed to the policy of commemoration, which was held not only in the Soviet period in the history of Vyborg, but in the post-Soviet and Finnish. The study of the perception of Vyborg, especially young people, it is relevant in the practice of the existence in Russia of such a new and promising life forms the boundary of the city, as the “twin city”, as many scholars are now writing. The research of imaginary urban space of Vyborg as a border town with a complex identity is especially important for the North-West region of Russia.
