Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of mass sources on the history of the abolition of serfdom (statutory ratification) in the Chernozem centre of Russia. The object of study selected Tambov province. In the center of the research is the application of mathematical-statistical apparatus (sampling), computer technologies, which allow to formalize and handle large information arrays. In recent years fundamentally changed the character and methods of such research. Sampling method enables to handle a large volume of sources. Representative samples provide an opportunity to study the various aspects of the history of serfdom in large regions. It is considered that the sample gives less meaningful results, but it is not. To assert that in the absence of documents we cannot make representative conclusions would be wrong. Compliance with all selection criteria of the data allows to work in conditions, when analyzing large amount of data or, on the contrary, no part of it.
